Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to service and re-grease my ANDERSEN Winches?
Under normal use we recommend to dismantle, clean and lubricate the winch once every second year. Under extensive use, such as racing, charter or blue water sailing, we recommend to lubricate and service the winch at least once every year.
I need to service and re-grease my winches. I suppose, I can use any kind of grease for that purpose?
No! We strongly recommend always using ANDERSEN Winch Grease, when lubricating your winches. Several types of grease, including “marine grease” are not suitable for lubrication of winches. Non-suitable grease can cause malfunction, which could result in fatal injuries for the user and others.
I have “ANDERSEN Scandinavia” winches on my boat; they would have been purchased prior to 1992.  Which service kits should be used for these winches?
Please use the following link to our Service Kit section. This will guide you to the right service kit
We have several ANDERSEN winches. Is it possible to arrange a winch 46 ST so that the drum turns in the opposite direction to normal? If so, how?
No, this is not an option. All* ANDERSEN winches are constructed for one way rotation only (*except the MEGA Yacht winch product range).
Is there any concern that I need to take into consideration when exchanging the arm springs for the pawls in my ANDERSEN Winches?
Yes the current type of arm springs can only be positioned in one direction, please follow the instructions on this link.
Our old sailing boat has been refitted with ANDERSEN self-tailing winches by a previous owner some years ago. Now I need spare parts for them. How do I find out the age or a version number to ensure the right parts?

On all ANDERSEN winches the production Year, Month and Version No. are stamped [YY-MM-VER.] on top side of the deck flange, between the mounting bolt holes. Visible when the polished drum is lifted off (see instructions)

NB! On very old winches, a similar stamp was placed on the bottom side of the flange.

What does the "FS" in 52 ST FS mean?
FS means “Full Stainless.” The black top disc spring is exchanged with a polished stainless steel construction, like the black bottom ring (from size 46ST and up) is exchanged with a ring in polished stainless steel.
I have ordinary ANDERSEN winches on my sailboat. Can they be rebuild from non-self-tailing to self-tailing winches with original parts?
No, this is not possible. The two types of winches are different in the basic construction.
